I don't believe that any street bike was doing 170 mph before the Honda CBR1100XX. My 1998 VFR800 should be good for about 149, and I believe that it's faster than any Interceptor before it. There's probably a dozen (maybe more) streetbikes capable of 170 now.
Last Friday afternoon, I stopped at a manufacturing representative's open house party. Asked the receptionist where I could hang up my Aerostich 1-pc suit? The fact that it was pushing 90F outside undoubtedly contributed to someone asking me why I was wearing it, that it wasn't cold outside. I replied that the asphalt was still pretty hard. He shook his head, didn't understand.
p.s.
I don't know about your BMW, but Honda motorcycle speedometers read consistently about 10% high. My '75, '76, and '79 all did, as does my '98. I believe most Japanese bikes also read high.
