A followup to my original post, I tried a slightly different approach.
I refilled the water reservoir and idled the car. The temp needle rose from cold to normal and stayed there. After 15 minutes, and with the filler cap off, the engine began to pump cold water up out of the filler neck. This may have been what I thought before was "boiling over", but it was cold water, not hot.
The oil is clean looking and the dipstick shows no sign of sludge.
Could this be a stuck thermostat or should I be thinking blown head gasket ? There isn't water in the oil or noticeable steam from the exhaust.
