The title of this post is probably misleading. The problem is not the engine overheating, the problem is the engine pumping coolant up out of the expansion tank. This happens after about 15 minutes of run time, with a cold engine.
In looking at the coolant flow diagram, it appears that when the thermostat is closed, the coolant in the block is isolated from the expansion tank, and there is not a problem. As soon as the thermostat opens, the coolant passage from the engine block is connected to the expansion tank, and it appears that this coolant is being pressurized by leakage from the combustion chamber, hence coolant being pumped out of the tank.
This is not good news, and I would love to have someone contradict this theory, but I'm afraid it points to a head gasket leak.
