I only tried once to program a 9-5 key with the Tech 2 clone and it was successful, without security access. I was with a friend who was looking at a mid-2000s 9-5 for sale. The owner had two keys, but only one was programmed. We went through the procedure on the Tech2 and then both keys worked. I did not try it last year when I bought a 2004 9-3 because you have to reprogram all of the keys to add one. I was concerned I might end up with no working keys if I botched the procedure. With my Saab master tech 10 minutes away I let him handle it along with the state inspection. I think the keys on esaabparts.com are the way to go for the inexperienced. You can get the “guts” online from a used key and add them to a blank key, but you still have to get the key cut and programmed. As you say, the cutting is not a job every locksmith can handle. But I cannot stress enough the importance of having at least two keys for every Saab. As we know, if the only key is lost, it becomes a very expensive proposition to get the parts and programming, not to mention the towing, to get the car running again.
Both my 2000 and 2001 9-5s have the problem with the radio losing its “marriage” to the car when the battery is disconnected. The radios can be sent off for repairs to this problem, but with a Tech 2 clone it’s a two minute job to perform the marriage ceremony. I am glad not to have to bother my local Saab master tech every time this happens. With the old cars not being driven much (plus having too many Saabs) I have to periodically charge the batteries, especially in cold weather. A Tech 2 becomes even more valuable with these old 9-5s.
