I just traded my '99 A4 2.8 QM for an '02 9-5 Aero (manual) and, oh boy, the Saab is a far superior car. My experience with A6s has reminded me of driving rental Grand Marquis and Tauruses. The A6 is a wonderful car which I'd suggest to my grandmother, but definitely not for someone who enjoys driving. Too big, soft, and floppy.
The Aero has more than adequate torque, front wheel drive is actually rather entertaining (torque steer is really NOT an issue when you're coming from the front-biased Quattro system anyway), and the interior appointments are classy. Best, probably, the car doesn't garner any unwanted attention in dimly lit parking garages like BMWs, Mercedeses, and, to an extent, Audis.
Very pleased with my 9-5, would recommend it to anyone.
