Tire width

Ed: My guess is it's that extra width that the 225/45/17 inch combo has that is the reason. I have been reading this board for other's inputs, and along with my own experience with a 9-5 with 16 inch winter tires, I have pretty much decided to stick with the 16 inch setup for the winter. A wider tire obviously will not bite into the deep snow as well as a narrow one will, all other factors being equal. If you add in the fat that in winter, potholes are more prevalent and hidden, the chance of tire and rim damage is a little greater with the 17 inch package. Obviously, how much snow or ice you anticipate having to deal with is a part of your decision. I am in southern NH, and have a steep driveway, but the roads do get cleared pretty quickly when it snows. I just do not feel like experimenting at this time, even though others have claimed good results.
Good luck on your decision.
