Your experience is shared by drivers the world over these days - the modern asbestos-free brake pads use shards of steel in the pad material. Result - the pads are as equally hard and therefore equally abrasive as the disc rotors.
This problem isn't just a Saab issue - it affects many manufacturers.
Several people on this board have elected to install EBC-Greenstuff pads (myself included) - a Kevlar/Copper compound with good brake performance and negligible rotor wear.
Why don't the manufacturers install them std? - well various views on that - one thing is pretty certain and is even documented on EBCs web site (along with the cure) is that the pads can glaze over reducing braking performance over time - easy DIY remedy only needing a bit of empty highway.................
You'll have to bite the bullet this time and buy new rotors - insist on the EBC pads though.
