2002 Aero automatic transmission questions

I've been driving my 2002 9-5 Aero (with 5 speed automatic transmission) for a couple of weeks. I notice that when I downshift from drive to third while driving down a hill at 30-35 mph, there is almost no noticeble increase in "engine braking". When I downshift to 2nd gear, there is a slight change - but not very much...the car barely slows down. However, there is a major increase when I shift to first gear, say from 20 mph. The engine braking effect is very strong. I used to drive an Acura 3.5 RL (1998), and there was a much greater change when down shifting from drive to 3rd and second.
Also, the transmission is 5 speed, but there are only 4 forward gear positions. Can anyone explain how this works?
Thanks.
