Thanks for the information. If one cannot maunually select first gear, is it then only engaged at very low speeds, when accelerating?
Also, when travelling in the city down a long hill at 35mph, the car tends to speed up. From what I understand, downshifting will not really have much od a braking effect at this speed. So, I guess there will be more wear and tear on the brakes, and less on the transmission.
