API rating is just a series of formal benchmarks that oil manufacturer must go through in order to *buy* a license from API. These benchmarks certainly do not cover the whole range of wear situations where one oil may be far better than another. API rating is the LOWEST acceptable certification that manufacturers specify in the US. Because of US law, they cannot require the customer to use ONLY the oil that has obtained their own formal approval like they do in Europe. If they did, they would have to pay for it themselves. Therefore, they require a minimum API rating as a compromise in North American market. The dealers usually use the real thing, such as Mobil 1 with proper Mercedes-Benz spec sheet at Mercedes dealerships, etc.

There are numerous other oil rating one can look at. I think the most stringent are individual manufacturer ratings, such as BMW Special Oil, Mercedes Benz spec sheet 229.1, Volkswagen 501.00, etc., etc. Then come industry ratings such as API and ACEA. One can also make a judgement based on the kind of base stock used in making the oil. Expensive Group IV and V base stocks are worth the investment because of their far superior properties. Group III oils are worth buying only given a low price point, since they are only marginally better than good Group II/II+ oils. Good Group II/II+ non-synthetic at $0.94/qt is a much better buy than Castrol Syntec Group III at $4.50/qt. On the other hand, Kendall GT-1 with API SL, ACEA A3/B3/B4, BMW Long Life, Mercedes-Benz spec sheet 229.3, Porsche, VW 505, 502 and 500 ratings is Group IV and worth the $4.50.
