Jason, good post and analysis.
Dennis, I think your plan is OK, but as the new owner of a '02 silver Linear I'm going to follow in the path of Jason.
I just picked up some of the Mobil 1 0W-40 for my FIRST oil change at 1K miles. Yes, not recommended per se or a covered service, but I get the distinct impression Saab/GM is just trying to cut costs and the consequences of metal grit in the engine for the first 5-10K WILL NOT be apparent during the warranty life (50K) of the car and may actually help their service/parts bottom line after that. Of course, if you are leasing the car, well, then the lack of a 1K change probably isn't going to cause YOU any problems down the line.
That being said, the manual does indeed recommend full-synthetic in 0W-40 and the way it is worded I would find it very difficult to believe that moving over to Mobil 1 for ALL (including scheduled SAAB) future oil changes would cause problems with the warranty. I almost get the impression some engineer is tipping you off -- "Go get full synthetic you stupid American!"
This is most likely a non-issue. The SAAB oil blend is supposedly darn close to full synthetic anyway (can someone confirm this?).
Hey, it's just oil...
