Flood car totalled? Maybe, maybe not

I'm not an insurnace adjuster, but I have had experience with flooded cars. Lost one, salvaged one. There are several factors that will come into play. If it just got the exhaust and the carpets are wet, if they can dry it out and the electronics, tranny and engine check out OK for water damage, the car is most likely salvageable. If it got the ECU or ruined the engine or tranny (depending on how long the car sat in the water), that's a different story.
Interestingly, I found out that the power seats are one of the things that will determine whether or not a car is totalled. From what I was told when my first car bit the dust in a flood, these are not a replaceable item like and engine or tranny, and it is cost prohibitive for companies to stock it as a replaceable part. Power seats are like the 3rd most expensive item on a car behind the engine and tranny. When they go-the car goes.
I lost an '89 Acura Legend in the great May 8th flood of 1995 here in New Orleans. My '94 900SET got caught in rapidly flooded streets 4 yrs ago, getting the exhaust and carpets as the water rose above the floor sill about 8 in off the ground-but was dried out and cleaned up (I was hoping for a total). Still running fine today.
Another interesting note-I was told by the tow truck driver back in the '95 flood that insurers totalled cars that had water up to the dashboard to the point where the gauges fogged up. I had asked him if he thought my wife's car would be totalled. He said (off the record) that if you want a car to be totalled (due to flood), just stick a water hose in the air vent and turn it on. (that just seems cruel) The insurers won't waste their time investigating it if they see water condensation in the dash and they'll just total it outright. Food for thought...
I didn't say that tho'...and don't quote me on that...I will not be held responsible... ;-)
