Hi,
I thought from subject line he was complaining about horse manure
or something :-)
I agree with mlc that it is marketing, and we all know that shape
of the HP curve is important as well.
For instance, engine on 525 generates 184 HP peak power, which is
just 1 horse-power less than on base 9-5. However, we know that the poor
engine on a 525 has to be flogged and only generates 184 horse-power
at 6000 rpm, and the engine has to be rev'ed very near 5000 rpm to get
a good percentage of peak power.
However on a 9-5, torque curve is very flat. So, good power can be
had even at 2000 rpm. So, by the time 525 can generate 184 horse-power,
the driver would be squinting at tail-lights of base 9-5.
Try explaining all that to a teenager with a short attention span
on a marketing brochure.
Also, as Coolknight and Dean will tell you, it is very easy and
inexpensive to get a little extra power from an engine with a turbo.
I'm glad you didn't ask this in the Performance BB :-)
thanks
Jae
