You're right about this. There are so few places that one could make use of the MAXIMUM horsepower that Saabs are capable of delivering. Since the US has the most automobiles by far of any land, there is a hugh mixture of all-out street-brawlers to under-powered econoboxes and everything in between. They don't mix together well and besides, Americans are awful (as a whole) when it comes to driving; eating, cell phones, feet dangling out the window, front seats tilted in nearly a 45 degree angle (the younger generation), etc. Those HP figures are peak figures and very few can every coax that much from their machines.
We do rely on torque and as the '60's muscle cars always had that in mind with their optional rear end ratios for drag events that many opted for in street use. But, you cannot have one without the other, that is, torque and horsepower are related. As one increases, the other will also increase, but, Saab allows a "flatter" torque curve than many other manufacturers. This is where we get our kick. I like the idea that my 4-cylinder can accelerate very rapidly to get onto highways when necessary yet delivers a little over 30 miles to a gallon on a highway trip....in a 3600 lb car with the air conditioning on! Quite remarkable as it passes those 5-6000 lb SUVs delivering 1960's vintage gas mileage complete with clumsy handling (and there's nothing to do with "SPORT" in an SUV).
That's my rant....now, back to work.
