Hot summer traffic in NY is nothing like hot weather down South. I remember driving to my first SOC in Atlanta from N'Awlins in '95-the SID was reading 104 degrees most of the way-and my A/C in my little 4 cylinder worked fine.
If need be, one could get the smaller 16" wheels and easily sell your 17" wheels on ebay. Probably could make money in the process. New Orleans ranks only behind Boston as having the worst roads in the country in the most recent survey done a few months ago. My '94 SET sports the "Klingon style" 17" 9-5 Aero wheels and I haven't had a problem-whereas with the original 16" Viking Shield wheels I replaced 2 and fixed one (three total).
Go figure.
