Hi,
1999 was the first generation of 9-5 and was the most problematic
of the 9-5's. If you can afford 2000 or 2001, you may have less problems.
I believe that there were problems with ECU recall with 1999 model.
You can save yourself some trouble in this regard by getting yourself
a '99 model which has already had ECU replaced.
Also, there is the "blue-smoke" problem. If the car is still under
warranty, you can fix this by having turbo replaced.
I personally recommend inline-4 (either light pressure or full
pressure). It has a timing chain and not timing belt, and Saab
technicians have decades of experience with this engine.
V6 is a fine engine also. The extra weight plants the front end a
little better for better traction. So, you'll get better acceleration
from stand-still. I4 gives you better front/rear balance, which helps in
handling characteristics.
9-5 is a very reliable automobile. However, you may save yourself
some headaches if you go for '00 or '01. You just missed the '02 new
car fire-sale. They were giving those things away :-)
thanks
Jae
