Scott,
Generally speaking, the 9^5 is far and away the most reliable car in Saab's history. Others have already mentioned the ECU recall (should have been performed on all '99s by now, but you'll need to verify that it's been done) and failing turbos (in the 4cyl only).
There was a sound-deadening package added during the model year which reduced road noise (search the archives for more). There have also been climate control computer failures, console display failures and ignition module failures.
It would seem that the V6 is proving the more trouble-free engine of the two available. We'll know more as 9^5s begin reaching 200k miles. The timing belt/timing chain thing is a complete non-issue. Saab USA foots the bill for the first V6 timing belt change at 60k mi, and anybody who's ever had to change the timing chain on an I4 (and it does have to be done as time goes on) would gladly have changed a belt instead.
In any case, I'd look for a lower mileage example that's been well cared for and drive it. Don't worry about which engine is under the hood until you decide whether you like that particular car.
