"compaqted" missed one vital step. ALWAYS test a new thermstat before installing it! Even brand new ones can be defective. If you install a defective new part, then you naturally assume that it was not the cause, and you can waste many hours and hundreds of $$ chasing a phantom problem.

Place the new stat in a pot of hot water on the stove top and increase the temp until the water boils. Ideally you should have a thermometer there to check the opening temperature, but that is not so important as ensuring that the stat opens fully, smoothly and consistantly. You can use a pair of tongs to remove the stat to see if it closes smoothly, then dunk it back in to watch it open. The opening temp is normally stamped on the housing.

I returned a faulty stat once and the parts guy looked at me strangely, but gave me a new one. That one worked.

Test the old stat in the same way - that will verify if it was sticking.

It is also prudent to pressure test the cooling system and radiator cap - that would be my next step if a new (good) stat does not cure the problem. You can buy a cooling sysytem test kit for less than US$100 from NAPA, or rent one from many local parts stores for a few dollars.

Also, (I keep thinking of things) you should flush the system and replace the coolant with new stuff since you are going to the trouble of draining it to replace the stat. The car is now 4 years old and likely ready for a coolant change.
