They had three different courses laid out to make each competitor look bad. The Lexus was on the twistiest course, and before we set off the "impartial" representative in the car told us to make sure and notice just how intrusive the traction control was in the tighest corner and how long it took to get back up to speed. Hey let's stack the deck shall we?
When it was my turn to drive the 325 I casually slipped it into 4 instead of D, since I know that little German tranny trick from my BMW/Audi days. The instructor just as casually slipped it back into D without looking. The event was sponsored by Car and Driver, Road and Track and Caddy, and the veneer of impartiality fell away pretty quickly. But to the credit of the testing company reps who rode in each car, they strongly encouraged us to beat the crap out of all the cars. Because I tend to drive a bit more controlled than most, my ride was smooth but fast and the rep gave me a little look afterwards to try and figure out why there wasn't any red mist visible. I pity whoever bought any of those cars afterwards, they had no brakes, rotors or tires left.
