I read somewhere that the "thud" in the door closing is usually a function of the weatherstripping and how it mates/compresses when the door is shut. The 9-5 has more than one layer of weatherstripping which no doubt contributes to its solid feel. What did the Cadillac's look like?
It's a shame about the engine as I also read that the 3.2 liter V6 was destined for some future Saab models. One of the reasons for the coarseness is the odd "V" angle that was necessary for it to fit in future front wheel drive applications.
