I just upgraded to V1 from Passport 8500. I have owned various Escorts and Passports before. You need to practice in order to interpret alerts, but read the manual thoroughly and it will give you most of what you need to know. I find the arrow display distracting in town, because there are lots of alerts, and I tend to use only the audible. On the highway, it seems real useful. I get way too many X band alerts, even on the Advanced Logic mode, so I reprogram it to ignore X band completely in town. This is completely safe only if you monitor X band long enough to determine that no X band alerts are police radar, which is the case where I live. Reprogramming is pretty easy, and you can quickly add X band back in for trips to unfamiliar locations, but you need to get the directions from the website. They are not in the manual. Your best bet is to correctly interpret situations where the radar is pointed at someone else and slow down before you are the target. This works best with a fair amount of traffic. Don't forget to use your eyeballs. If you do get a sudden hard alert, brake as hard as possible. Police radar has a reject feature which will not allow the radar to lock unless it gets a consistent speed reading. As a somewhat grumpy Montana Highway Patrolman pointed out to me, however, he could see my speed numbers dropping rapidly even though his unit would not lock. If you hardwire the unit, no cord is visible. I really like the optional remote display unit, which I managed to mount right in front of that irritating cruise control light, so I solved two problems at once. Happy motoring.
