Most radar receivers are superheterodyne units. I don't know the technology, but they tend to give off radio signals in addition to receiving them. The good ones apparently mask the radiation quite well. I did not know that some apparently shut themselves down when they detect a radar detector detector. (Whew!). Ever pick up a strong alert on a two lane just as another vehicle goes by the other way, and you don't get any further alerts after that? The other car had a cheap detector which does not mask its own radiation, and your detector picked it up. Radio Shack had some real bad ones a few years ago. The Valentine manual tells you one reason for false alarms is operating the V1 in the same vehicle as another superheterodyne unit.
