Radar Detector Installation

I'm looking to install a hardwired power connection for my radar detector in my '01 S/W; I have a couple questions about doing so...
1. How does the panel containing the center overhead light, sunroof switch, etc. pull down? This is where I'm planning to grab power -- thinking I'll just grab the power going to the auto-dimming mirror, but I can't figure out how to remove the panel without forcing it.
2. The radar detector in question has a remote light/mute button accessory. I've been contemplating installing this behind one of the blank switch positions to the left of the steering wheel, around the fog light switch. Simple question, though: how to gain access to these? Do they just pop out?
Hopefully I can just run the wire under the headliner and the fabric of the A-beam of the driver's window, then behind the fusebox and into that location... For that matter I could grab power down there too but seems easier to just get it from the mirror...
Thanks for any info!
