Catherine, if you value the appearance of your fine car you will NEVER hire some kid to wax it. It is very easy to wax a car properly. It is just as easy to ruin the paint with carelessness.
One of the most important (and overlooked steps) before waxing is to clean the paint. There is always some buildup of sap and pollutants that the wax will not remove. By using a clay bar or a mild bug-remvoer solvent you can get the paint properly prepped before waxing.
Even pro detail shops can screw up your paint with over-aggressive polishes and buffers. If you really want the car to look nice, learn to do it (properly) yourself. Griot's Garage has a car care handbook that is a bit anal but has a wealth of info. It is included with some of their car care kits, or you can order it seperately.
The problems people have with improper waxing are due to ignorance and simple mistakes. Using the right materials and methods makes it reasonably painless, and a lot cheaper than routine visits to a detail shop.
