Along with snow and ice come POTHOLES. You'll be happpier hitting them with 215-55 shod 16 wheels than 225-45 shot 17 inchers - the dents will be at least a half inch shallower!
But if you do opt for a single set of year-around 17" tires, note that Nokian WRs are relatively unique in that they are XL load rated, just like the OE Primacy. They are also "V" speed rated, so I wouldn't worry about their standing up to high speed/hot weather. See NINES #259 for a description of the WR's new technology.
