Not a chemist, and can't explain why, but...

it works. Ask any Formula driver. I would assume that it has something to do with it being an inert gas? Perhaps, the electrons don't excite at as low of a temperature as oxygen? It's the same principle as having different melting points, freezing points or evaporation points? The majority of its expansion properties occur at a higher temp than can be produced in racing tyres? The remaining 21% of gas in the atmosphere is oxygen, I'm sure this has a great deal to do with it's expanding properties. Obviously nitrogen's reaction to heat is different than oxygen because it isn't flammable.
I can't tell you specific properties, but I know it works. We always kept airbottles filled with compressed Nitrogen for the tyres. I'm not saying that there isn't a PSI difference between hot and cold, altogether, but Nitrogen is much more predictable than using compressed air. We would see a 2-3 psi increase over the session instead of the higher change made by atmospheric air.
Cheers,
Brian.
