Doc,
I buy a daily drive car every 10 years. I started the search in 2001 and finsihed it in 2002. I took my time and took my rides for hours, not minutes, as I value my 10 year purchase maybe more than my car shopping time. I work in a high stress job, who doesn't right, so for me a test ride was a way to relax. The salesman didn't relax when I was test driving so they often just gave me the keys after I validated my insurance. Not all drives lasted long, some only for minutes because of the immediate poor feedback from the car.

When work really got to me I would drive across the river and take cars out ala the lunch break, really helped get things back in perspective.
I found when you go to the car shows, introduce yourself, and state you are serious the dealers are more willing to work with you hence here are the keys, bring it back by 5 when we close.

I am the type that has to make sure I got the right item regardless and as the years go by I realize this attribute is a curse more than an asset.
