The 9-5 leaves up to a quart of oil in the cooler. A quart in five is generally regarded as the maximum "safe to mix" concentration. Doing the math, it's probably best to stick with any given oil through at least three changes before switching again with a 9-5. Otherwise you can be creating a real "witch's brew" of different base oils and additive packages. The 9-3SS, with its near-vertical oil/water heat exchanger and its prodigeous sump capacity is probably safe to switch every change.
