EJ,
Narrowing your selection to 2 cars is a positive, personally I have a hard time getting to where you are at.
I take the analytic approach: I look at what my needs are by listing them out in a spreadsheet then cross check the cars I narrowed down against the list. (Now the good doctor will really know what an analytic analytic I am!)
I need;
1) A comfortable, supporting front seat for my co-pilot and myself.
1.a) Be it a short ride or a long trip I want my back supported.
2) I need heated front seats.
3) I need heated back seats for my friends, I live in the northeast.
4) I need an economical daily driver
4.a) Good on gas in the city
4.b) Good on gas on the highway
4.c) Does not require 93 octane
4.d) Is reasonable to insure\
4.e) Can be financed at a low interest rate.
4.f) Has a good warranty
4.g) Is reasonable to maintain (I have had great luck with my Saabs)
5) Is it safe for my family, my friends and myself for one never knows when somebody will suddenly hit you?
5.a) http://www.crashtest.com
5.b) http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov
5.c) http://www.hwysafety.org
5.d) http://www.iihs.com
5.e) Does the car have good brakes? (You need to take a long hard test drive)
6) Are the controls intuitive?
6.a) I do not want to have to try to figure out how to use something as I drive.
7) Are the controls logically placed?
7.a) Can I get to what I most often need without looking for it?
7.b) What controls are at my finger tips?
8) Is the rear seat roomy with ample head and leg room?
9) Is the trunk easy to get things in and out of?
9.a) Will I hit my head on the trunk lid when opened?
10) Are the fluids readily accessible and easy to check and refill when needed?
These are a few of my favorite things! (Anybody know who I should site so I don't get dinged for plagiarizing?)
This said, go back to the dealers and take the cars out for extended test drives. Ten minute around the corner being careful because it is the dealers car, with a salesman in it no less, does not for me constitute a test drive. Before I buy I want to make sure I know what I am getting because as others have said driving a mistake for 4 to 10 years is just no fun at all. Schedule an extended test drive where you take it out in the morning and return it in the afternoon. I would make an event out of it i.e., I would take my wife to brunch in the northwest hills of Connecticut, go to the Berkshires to see stuff, etc...
Life is short, have fun!
This said, one guy on my staff drives a black Maxima and he has been after me to sell him my 1992 9000S with 135,000+ miles on it. Seems he likes the ride and seats better than his 1998 Maxima.
