Your logic is fine, but there is a twist.
The turbo engines have a relatively low compression ratio at 9.3:1. So there is probably excessive octane available for the engine when cruising off boost. It is those conditions which dominate MPGs. In such a situation, a lower octane fuel with higher BTUs may deliver better MPGs. But with a Turbo, the highest octane pump gas is probably best. Many NG900 T5 owners were using mid grade at one point.
With a high compression engine, 10 or higher, the octane can have a significant impact on timing and MPGs when cruising.
