If the tires have not been changed to all-season, you will likely need snows. I agree with Tim Brown on the merits of a full snow tire/wheel set, for the reasons he stated. I live in N. Mass., and I put the Gislaved 16-in tires w/Saab alloy wheels on my 2000 9-5 SE, which I drove without problems for two winters. Last month I turned in the SE (kept the snows of course) and bought an '02 Aero with the 17-in Primacy set. In a light snow I felt very unsafe driving it home (they couldn't do the tire switchover that day). It slid and wandered all over, and had trouble in my gently sloped driveway. The next day it really snowed, and I just left it in the garage until the snows could be mounted. Now it's fine, come what may. You'll get longer life out of your regular tires and the ease of changeover is worth it. Plus, the Saab snowflake alloys look very nice on the Aero. I bought mine at the end of the first season on sale at the dealer for about $850 complete.
