Don't think I ever mistook one, and most the folks I worked with were intelligent and professional. However, there were those who should not have been employed . . . anywhere. They were that incompetent! So, ya I'm sure some fool has done exactly that a time or two.

Best way out of a ticket, IMHO, is to admit your wrongdoing and promise to use cruise control and pay better attention. However, some officers don't care whatsoever, it's just another ticket. My traffic training had two versions: 1. Make up your mind before ever approaching the car if you will issue the ticket, then stick to that decision no matter what. 2. Attitude check. If they get the picture that they need to pay better attention and follow the law, then a warning is sufficient. If they don't get it, give them an expensive reminder to think about.

Personally, I went for the second method, even in dealing with folks using radar detectors. I remember chuckling to a guy as I asked him if his detector had done any good, seeing as there we were at the side of the road with my lights going. His good natured answer and matter of fact admission of wrongdoing saved him about $80.

Incidently, it DID matter to me what people drove. A Saab Aero at 80-90 is much different situation than a rusty 84 Subaru at the same speed. Safety was my prime concern, not speed in and of itself. You want to drive a quality car fast outside town, then go for it. You want to blast through town with lots of traffic and pedestrians, and you are asking, nay, begging to go to jail.
