At the risk of starting analysis paralysis, this feature actually does not annnounce itself loudly when it works. I can only add that after four great winters in a 99 2.3 lpt with Gislaved snows in the winter, the Aero with the same tires and ESP/TCS is just about bulletproof in the snow. You cannot get the car out of shape in any kind of sane normal driving. That is just what it is there for, so personally,I don't want to know the nitty gritty details of how it kicks in or under what conditions it might not work. We have had one of the worst winters in New England in years, and my Aero routinely drives past stranded AWD and 4WD vehicles that are sitting there spinning all four wheels. Bottom line is that this just works. No need to over analyze.
