You are into money any way that you go.

Snow tires work very well, no all-season or non-season can come close.

I prefer performance tires for max control in the rain and best braking performance for summer weather.

You do end up spending more money, but good tires can save your life. Having tires and brakes that perform really well is just another kind of insurance. But instead of getting money, after a wreck, if you are still alive, you may just not be involved in a wreck at all. I have max peformance tires on my wife's Passat DTI because she complained that the all season type tires (she has good snow tires too) slid in the wet and the braking sucked on dry pavement. With the S-03 tires there seems to be no limit to braking performance and she can stop very quickly in the wet too. (no ABS) On the 75 mph expressway commute she has stated that those tires saved her butt at least two times where she feels that the old tires would have not allowed her to stop in time. There are sun glare events on that road were ther are surge braking problems. I was in on of those a few months ago and my perforamance tires and brake pads were very much needed, and an idiot in a SUV nailed me from behind, 95SET totaled. So a waste of time with better tires and brakes? Well his insurance will go up, mine certainly did not.

All season tires seem to be aimed at the folks who are percieved to be cheap, so the tire commpounds are hard to get long life. So they last a long time and become age hardened and dangerous. The tires that were on the Passat had lots and lots of tread left, it just was not useable anymore. So where the is economy in a long tread life tire when you have a choice of tossing them or driving dangerously when there is lots of tread left? Perhaps this is worse where summers are much hotter and longer.
