Regarding my 2002 9*5 station wagon (automatic, my fifth Saab, and I've currently got three in the garage).....
Soon after purchasing it last fall, my wife lost power (engine and electrical) exiting an interstate after many miles of heavy rain. No lights at all. Started up again after putting it in Park, but my wife remained a bit apprehensive for the remainder of the trip. Complete check at my shop (good mechanics), but nothing discovered. Shrugged our shoulders and blamed the heavy rain.
Now at about 18K miles on the odometer, my wife again is driving on a long trip. It had been raining earlier, but now there was only mist in the air. She's in the left lane of a major interstate (with lots of trucks) going about 70mph, two hands on the wheel, when she lost all power. The radio died as well as - apparently - the lights (it was dusk). Blinkers not working, nor power to the front passenger seat (my daughter had been sleeping). Drifted to the narrow shoulder and was able to restart the car after putting it into Park. She was very frightened to say the least, and holed up at a local hotel until I drove long distance with my 2001 9*5 stick to trade with her. No problems for me on the way home, but I kept staring at the shoulder all the way.
The car has been in the shop right for the last week. The mechanics have methodically gone through the car with the help of tech support, but they've not located the smoking gun. They've traced wires, soldered connections, replaced the ignition switch and the (?) crankshaft sensor. Could my daugheter have hit the key with her knee while sleeping? I've tested my own 9*5 at speed by "hitting" the key in the ignition. With some effort, I get it to turn off, but I still have lights and the blinkers (with the stick, I can actually restart on the fly). It's almost like someone unplugged the battery in my wife's car.
OK -- here's the question. Has this happened to anyone else (I've seen the Jan/Feb 2003 postings from ArcGal that sound similar) with a definitive explanation? This almost sounds like a bad software glitch, but I'm not willing to write off my favorite car just yet. Without a definitive fix however, it's going to be difficult getting my family in the station wagon.
Any help/suggestions at this point would be greatly appreciated.
