to understand how odd they look when mounted properly. You cannot generate the same tire image left and right by placing a mirror along any axis of the car.

The tread pattern (looking from the front of the car) on one side matches the tread pattern on the other side only when look from the BACK of the car (again not mirror image because the tread isn't symmetrical). That is exactly how the tire works and it is mounted as in your last statement because it does have an outside and only one outside for ALL tires. So the outside on one side of the car is also the outside on the other side but pointing backwards! In other words, the tire marks on the ground are not mirror images.

The only way to generate the same tire pattern between left and right is for the tire on one side to roll forward and the other side backwards. In fact if you mount the two asymmetrical tires on two ends of a pole correctly, and you rotate the pole around its midpoint, the tire marks would overlap exactly where a directional tire would not unless it has symmetrical pattern rolling forward and back.

I have found these asymmetrical tires quite fascinating as you could tell :-).
