The primary recommendation, ACEA A3/B3, simply can not be met with conventional oil. The general viscosity requirements: 5W (or 0W) for quick circulation during cold starts and HTHS of at least 3.5 centipoise (cP) for protection of the bearings simply can not be achieved with conventional oils. The reputed longevity of synthetic oils is not the primary reason for using it, b/c you can always change your oil more frequently. But no matter how often you change, conventional oil will not provide the same level of lubrication.
The HTHS (bearing) number is more important for turbocharged (and supercharaged) engines b/c of the higher bearing loads.
The "10,000 mile" recommended change interval is for vehilces which are not operated under "extreme conditions". Most peoples' use qualifies as "extreme conditions" i.e., short trips, traffic, punctuated by periods of high speed/high load. "Extreme conditions" changes the recommendatoin to 5000 miles.
