"....we recommend the following oil grades:
API SJ/CD/CF
ACEA A2/B2 or ACEA A3/B3

Basic recommendations for Saab engines:

SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40

SAE 5W-30 can also be recommended but in which case the oil must be semi or fully synthetic and fulfill ACEA grade requirements A3/B3.

Oils which are less viscous, such as 0W/-40/50 are becoming more common and may be used. However, the oil must be fully synthetic, of a well known brand, and fulfill ACEA grade requirements A3/B3. This viscosity makes starting in cold weather easier."

The above was word-for-word from my '00 9-5 manual which covers all models.

Saab dealers have been using a semi-synthetic 5W-30 "turbo" oil in recent years. Its good stuff and will work well for your car. Since the intro of the 9-3SS Saab is using a full synthetic 0W-30 which is an excellent oil.

The majority of us in this forum use full synthetics for its added protection and the ability to extend drain intervals. Turbo engines are notoriously hard on oil so using synthetic gives us that added measure of protection. IMO you can safely go 5,000 miles between oil changes using an oil like Mobil One, Quaker State European formula, or any store bought oil meeting ACEA A3/B3. You can probably go even longer than 5,000 using elite synthetics from Amsoil, Redline, or Royal Purple.

Personally, I use Castrol Syntec "made in Germany" 0W-30 in my SE V6.
