Just for the record, I doubt that the "majority" use synthetic oil. My Saab owner's manual (1999 9-5) recommends a 10K mile oil change interval, and no specification to use only synthetic. The way Saab can extend the oil change interval to 10K and thus reduce servicing costs is to specify synthetic or semi-synthetic oil which can easily go 10K miles or more.
I use 10W-30 Mobil regular oil (which meets the 'SJ' designation), not Mobil 1, and change it every 6K miles. Ditto on my wife's Volvo 940Turbo with 130K miles. Both cars run perfectly. My previous 900 with 280K miles got the same treatment.
It is just my humble opinion, but if you are changing fully synthetic oil at 5Km miles, you are not only wasting money but believing all the marketing hype out there. And these days, 'regular' oil has so many additives, it is pretty much a semi-synthetic already.
