We really need a wagon in our family and I have been driving a bunch of them. I am reasonably sure that I am going to get an '03 Aero Wagon to replace my '02 Aero sedan (I can swap the wheels and the Remus exhaust) because the prices are currently unbeatable... loaded wagon for $35K and $26K trade-in for my sedan. But I have been looking....

BMW 5-series. The 525i is dog slow (were talking 184hp in a heavy car) - you need the 540i - which is going to easily crest the $50K mark.

BMW 3-series - delightful car, but way too small to be a serious contender - at least the 2.5 litre motor has a fighting chance in the little wagon

The Audi A6 is no longer available in the Avant form in anything other than the 3.0 litre variant and no manual transmission. I did drive a one-year-old S6 Avant that was very tempting. I am actually still considering the A6 2.7t six-speed sean. It is vey roomy with the rear seats folded down and it is so beautiful inside and competent outside - they have a red sedan at our local dealer and they are eager to move the car. The A4 Avant 3.0 litre with the six-speed is a real delight and can be acquired for about $34K with some haggling (MSRP = $38K).

The W8 (drove the sedan) was disappointing and way too softly suspended - although I haven't tried the six-speed "sport' models

Good luck
Eric
