If you've never had enough dough to enjoy a new car don't sour everyone else on the experience by labeling depreciation horrendous. Autos all depreciate, and new and used cars depreciate at roughly the same rate. That $22k Certified used Saab your smiling about will be a $8k trade in in 3 years and 50,000 more miles. You said it, the dealer paid $15-18k and now that you've taken it off his lot and you want a to trade for sport utility because it's become too small he'll give the sport-ute dealer a $14k bid!

I used to have the same paradigm, that depreciation was intolerable on new cars. It's a great marketing tool when your selling used cars for a living. But I had some friends I sold on that premise and 3-5 years later when they came back they weren't really in a better, and in some cases the were worse off, than if they had bought new.

If a used vehicle is your budget fine, but if a new vehicle is in your budget don't be swayed by that old argument "Why not buy a used one a couple of years old?" and beat the new car depreciation. The difference is not the rate of depreciation, it's just the scale of your personal budget. A new car has brand new everything and a better warranty to minimize unforseen costs and the satisfaction of a new car is a very memorable worthwhile thing.

If you buy new you won't "need" a newer car near as often, you won't be on a first name basis with a mechanic who's kids are in college, and by buying a new Saab you'll likely spend less than you would on a used competitor and get a better car.
