Unfortunately, I've also learned the hard way that making any recommendation about cars is a no-win situation. If you recommend a great car, the owner will thank you, and may recommend the car to others. But the no-win is that whenever *anything* goes wrong with the car, you will hear about it. If the battery dies or the seat is uncomfortable (things totally out of your control) you'll hear for the rest of your life "yeah, Paul recommended that car to me, and now look at what happened...".
I manage large UNIX servers, and people are always asking me to recommend a computer for them. I just skirt the issue and say "well, you should try them all out and make a decision when you find one you like". I once recommended a machine that I really loved, but my understanding of the system was much deeper than that of the person who was to use it, and now I still get calls saying "hey, can you fix this? You were the one who recommended it!!!".
So feel better. It may just be growing pains on your Dad's 9-5. I've found that my '99 9-5 is extremely reliable, and that if things are fixed on these cars, they usually don't need to be fixed again.
