Having owned an 87' 900T, a 99' 9-3, and now a 99' 9-5 wagon, I pushed hard to get my parents into a 9-5. My father is the type that has literally tried every car brand over his life span. He was game to give the Saab a chance and we went shopping for a certified used 9-5 sedan at our local dealer. We found an early 99' (had the older 3-spoke 16" wheels) and took it for a spin. At one point I recall Brian Flippo remarking on this board that the interior of the early 9-5's smelled like wet dog. Sure enough, this one lacked that nice leather aroma and smelled faintly of canine cologne. In any event, he thought the car drove well and we left the dealer without making a decision.

I cautioned him about the early 9-5's and didn't bad-mouth the car we test drove in particular, but figured we'd continue our search. I was wrong. One week later, he bought the car we test drove. Things went downhill from there.

He travels for work during the week to a remote town in central PA. Approximately two months ago he was stranded with a bad DI. He's also had a leaky windshield washer fluid resevoir that needed to be replaced. His sunroof came off the track and needed to be muscled into place while 1500 miles from home on another trip. And now I get a call tonight that the car died on him this evening while in remote PA. He's pissed to say the least. Every problem he's had has been covered by the CPO program, but there have been some MAJOR inconveniences accompanying these break-downs over the 5 months he's owned the car.

He has vowed to sell the car the moment he gets back to town on Friday (he's a little impulsive that way). I dare not try to explain to him that he jumped into this car without DD and that he could have a very positive experience with a 2000 and newer or a later 99', let alone suggest that leasing a new one is pretty cost-effective these days.

I think I'll just lay low for a little while ... Damn! I wanted this to work out.
