As I've posted about before, the EPA fuel economy cycles are arbritrary and outdated. The highway cycle has an average speed of 48 mph, I kid you not. The only adjustment the government made was just reducing the test values by 10% city and 22% highway for the sticker. I think this happened back in the 80s after many complaints. The weirder thing, (although it's necessary) is that they don't test in real conditions, but on a dyno with resistance dialed in based on the time it takes for the vehicle to coast down from one speed to another.
As a result, vehicles with bad aero and large frontal area traveling at high speeds will do much worse with real-world F.E. than smaller vehicles.
