I'm going to do the PCV replacement listed in the TSB.
There is another TSB that says the banjo bolt that connects the turbo coolant line to the head also needs to be replaced. Apparently, the original bolt was too small an opening to allow engouh collant to sufficiently cool the turbo. The excess heat cooks the oil which blocks the oil path forcing it around the seal. This is all in the TSB. I'll replace that as well.
I have a neighbor that has a lot of turbo experience. When I told him I thought I needed a new turbo, he told me that he already knew that. Apparently he could hear it whining when I drove up.
It's hard to get a read on the "color" of the smoke. It is definitely not coolant. Not white enough and is smells like oil/gas.
It's not as black as I would expect if it was getting too much gas.
Any way I can check for a leaky injector myself? Is that a common problem.
Is there anyway I can verify the problem is with the turbo? I'm thinking of just pulling it off and taking a look inside.
In the meantime I'm looking for a rebuild kit for the turbo. My turbo experienced neighbor says the rebuild is "stupid easy", so I'll give it a shot if I can find the bearings and seals.
Regarding the Aero turbo. Other than avoiding the oil seal issue, are there other benefits (power, boost, spool up time, lag, etc).
Thanks,
James
