When I was 16 and got my license and I got a cheap Whistler radar. I was surprised my parents didn't really say anything and my Dad asked if he could occasionally borrow it....So I don't know what life is like without a radar detector. I can tell you the few times I wasn't using it I got tickets and I have no idea how many times it has saved me, but its a lot.

Now I don't always drive fast, I just have spurts. That said I like the security of the radar and honestly when I don't have one now its the best way to get me to drive 10 MPH or less over the posted limit.

All that said I like having it there so if I want to spurt I can in confidence - doesn't matter what I am driving - all cars can go over the posted limit.

The V1 is a nice device. I started out with the cheapy Whistler, went to a Bel, to an old generation Escort, to new generation esort and now have the passport 7500. I like the Passport, but would also be happy with a V1. If you want to save your money you will likely be as happy with the Passport as you are with the V1 for half the cost. Maybe a good entry plan;)

As other have said - hard to be safe when instant on is in play...my advice listen for even the faintest of signals when you are hunkering along alone on a road. If there is no chance anyone is in front of you for at least a mile don't risk it unless you can see everything perfectly. Instant on will come from no where and your friend smokey will be standing with a gift.

The funny part is that I have gotten more tickets for having a radar detector than for speeding. Back in CT where I used to live and had a radar for all the years there I got busted 4 time for having a radar detector - had an attorney friend that took care of all these and had them thrown out. BS law anyway - not sure this is still law in CT and Virginia....
