Both the diesels and gasser engines will outlast the vehicle with proper maintenance.

Timing belts, tensioners, cam seals etc are expensive things to change, huge amounts of dealer labour. So that sucks big time and will wipe out the benefits of fuel economy, at least in North America. With the VW TDIs there is almost an undergound cult doing TB changes and helping others. Get it wrong and you get bent valves. It is a difficult job.

The TB's also drive the injection pumps. And with injector pressures getting to 23,000 PSI the loads on the TB lead to shorter TB change intervals.

Diesels engines need the rigth oil and will fail if neglected, just as many Saab I4 gassers do from sludged dyno oil and neglected changes.

A true synthetic 5W40 diesel oil is very hard to find and expensive in this market. And diesels do use oil. So I think that diesels in this market are a bad combo given the level of owner knowledge. So these will be great for the knowledgeable diesel enthusiast, but not a good choice for the ignorant masses.
