All good points. But I lived in LA for 11 years and sold two cars privately there. So I guess I was lucky to deal with honest people. If someone wants to test drive my car, I go with them, as many dealers do. The eccentric phone calls etc can be bothersome, but one weighs that against the annoyance/anxiety of dealing with that minority of car dealers who are not upfront. I say this with not a little chagrin, since my father was a car dealer for 53 years, and a quite honest one. As for equity issues, yes, you have to deal with that, but I have found that going into a car dealership works best for the buyer when the deal is simple. For me, that has meant no trade-in, the negotiation of which always complicates matters between the dealer and the buyer, and a straight-up cash deal, or financing a car w/ a cash downpayment, not a trade. Maybe part of my dissatisfaction is that I feel I've never been able to negotiate the price I thought I should've had for my car when I did go the trade-in route. That feeling can sour the excitement of buying the new car.
