I think even if the car WAS sold with free service when new, that ended at 30 or 36K miles if I remember correctly from other Saab owners posting here.
It is the owners responsibility to maintain the car. The first owner might even have taken a hit when returning the lease car for not doing the 30K or he did the service himself without keeping track or leaving the reciepts in the car for the next buyer.
At 40K miles I would have a hard time to determine if the 30K was done or not. The spark plugs have already burned for 10K miles and air filter have already collected dirt.
If it is the wrong style/brand spark plugs and an after market brand air and fuel filter, than you know for sure that someone have done at least part of a service.
Best way is to find a good Saab shop and have the 30K service done, especially the coolant and brake fluid because when they go bad, they cause a lot of expensive repair many years later.
A complete 30K service runs around $450.00-650.00 depending on the shop.
