Q's: Bad Crank Sensor & Bad DI Cassette at 15K/12 mo?

I'll post the entire horror story later (players includes Canada and US versions of Saab, OnStar, and Roadside Assistance), but my Crank Sensor and my DI cassette *simultaneously* failed last week on my 2002 9-5 with 15k miles and a mere 12 months as I was driving on the highway at 70 mph. The experience was scary, as the car felt (though did not sound)like I was driving on those rumble strips that keep you off the median [which I attribute to misfiring of cylinder(s)], and then the check engine light started flashing. Accelerator no longer accelerates the car! By the time I had pulled over to the side of the road, the car stalled (!!) and then would not restart.
That is, until it was towed 3 hours away to the nearest (3 hours ?!?!?) Saab dealer and then cooled overnight. At which point, it restarts. Service advisor seems to want me out of his hair as he is busy and I am a US customer in Canada. I ask about diagnostics, but he says car is running and won't show anything. I ask whether diagnostics will show history, and he admits it might. So I insist on diagnostics, and nothing is found. I drive 1.5 hours back toward home, and problem reoccurs. I nurse the car to 1/8 mile from local (and trusted dealer) and car dies. They run diagnostics, and Crank Sensor and DI Cassette have failed.
Questions: Could the failure of these two be related? Are these common failures? Do they fail together often? If diagnostics were, in fact, run the first time, shouldn't they have picked up one (or both) failures?
